Q: Grubs recently got most of my back yard and I replaced with Raleigh. I've heard several versions of the advantages of Raleigh over regular St. A.. Could I hear yours? Also, are there disadvantages or things I should watch for?A: Raleigh is the most widely planted of the St. Augustine types. Raleigh has had problems with the fungus disease Brown Patch if overfertilized and overwatered. Best treatment of brown patch is with products containing terrachlor (Turfcide). My personal favorite St. Augustine is Floratam because it is chinch bug resistant as well as showing some signs of being more tolerant to brown patch problems. Both Raleigh and Floratam are resistant to SAD(St. Augustine Decline). Fertilize after mowing the grass twice in the spring with a slow-release fertilizer such as 19-5-9 (3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio) and again in the fall with a winterizer fertilizer (3-1-2 or 4-1-2 ratio) such as 15-5-10 or 20-5-10. Water thoroughly once a week and mow as high as the mower can be set ever 5-7 days.
