Pummelo

1. Q: I am looking for some information about a fruit that is bigger than a grapefruit and tastes like a cross between a grapefruit and an orange. I found them once in a grocery store and I believe they were called Pimello's.

A: The fruit you are referring to is known as a pummelo, Citrus maxima. The scientific name for grapefruit is Citrus paradisi. It is a very large, round to pear-shaped, yellowish orange fruit with very thick skin. The fruits are borne singly and can weigh up to 20 pounds. The round shaped tree grows 15-30 feet tall. It like grapefruit, is strictly a tropical plant. Some of the more common varieties of pummelo include: Chandler, Ichang, Red Shaddock, Reinking, and Webber. It is not popular with consumers due to the extremely thick rind.
