Kale

Q. When harvesting kale, should you harvest the whole plant of just the mature leaves?

A. Kale can be harvested by removing just the older outside leaves or by cutting off the whole plant. Most gardeners prefer harvesting the tender, mature leaves and allowing the plant to continue producing for an extended period.

Q. Is there a difference between kale and collard greens?

A. Horticulturists do not agree on the answer to this question. Some believe kale is simply a curly-leafed form of collard greens with no real distinction. Others think that there is a distinct difference in flavor when cooked. Kale and collards are close kin and for the most part are identical in environmental and cultural requirements as well as problems with diseases and insects.
